1-on-1 Swim Lessons

This program accommodates Swimmer 1-6 and Preschool 1-6. Classes are available on a limited basis and not at all locations. They are intended as a support for participants who have repeated a level several times. This is an opportunity to focus on completing specific skills in order to move to the next level. These classes are available only when classes, which have not reached minimum enrolment levels have been cancelled, or waiting lists have been accommodated.

Adult 1 Swim - Ratio 1:8

You'll work towards a 10-15 m swim on your front and back. You'll do jump entries from the side and recover an object from the bottom in chest-deep water. Improve your fitness and your flutter kick with 4 x 9-12 m interval training.

Adult 2 Swim - Ratio 1:8

Kick it up a notch working on two interval training workouts of 4 x 25 m kicking and front or back crawl. You'll be able to perform dive entries and demonstrate breaststroke arms and breathing over 10-15 m. You'll be supporting yourself at the surface for 1-2 minutes, and showing off your handstands in shallow water.

Adult 3 Swim - Ratio 1:8

No sweat (or at least none anyone can see). You'll learn eggbeater, stride entries and compact jumps. You'll be doing a 300 m workout and sprinting 25-50 m. You'll master your front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Whew!

Aquatic Staff Screening - Wet Interview

Aquatic staff hiring consists of a wet and dry interview. During the wet interview applicants will be asked to perform National Lifeguard skills and demonstrate certain instructional skills. Applicants are required to bring a bathing suit and whistle. A dry interview will be arranged upon successful completion of the wet interview. Please contact the Aquatic Coordinator of the facility where the screening is taking place if you wish to register less than 48 hours in advance.

Aquatic Staff Training on Site

Description: Aquatic staff training done on pool site. Age: 16 years +. Staff must register and attend in order to be briefed on new policies and procedures, review essential skills and demonstrate their abilities in order to ensure they remain at City of Vaughan and LSS standards. Failure to attend may result in loss of shift or contract termination.

Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid

Bronze Cross offers advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. The difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork are emphasized. Lifesavers learn spinal injury and pulseless victim rescues. Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training in all aspects of first aid and CPR including medical and legal considerations of spinal injury management; environmental injuries; bone and joint injuries; abdominal and chest injuries; burns; and other medical emergencies. Lifesavers also learn CPR techniques for adult, children and infant victims. Prerequisite: Age 13 years +, Bronze Medallion.

Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid

Learn lifesaving principles embodied in the (4) components of water-rescue education: judgment, fitness, knowledge, and skill. Rescuers learn tows, carries and release methods in preparation for risky and challenging rescues. Swimmers develop stroke efficiency, complete a 500m timed endurance swim, and learn techniques for managing spinal injuries in shallow water. Training in Emergency First Aid provides general knowledge and practical experience in select aspects of first aid and CPR. Lifesavers also practice CPR techniques for adult and child victims, victim assessment, and first aid for a variety of victim types including bleeding, heart attack and stroke. Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star.

Fitness Swimmer - Ratio 1:10

No matter what your age, Fitness Swimmer helps improve your overall physical fitness. Fitness Swimmer is a structured approach based on accepted training principles and practices including interval training, sprints and distance swims. Candidates will participate in setting their own goals, design workouts and learn to use pace clocks and timers to reach their target zone.

Fitness Swimmer: Advanced (8 - 13 years) - Ratio 1:10

This advanced level builds on the competitive swimming skills learned in Fitness Swimmer. Participants learn proper stroke technique in front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and/or butterfly, and racing skills including flip turns, dives from starting blocks and using the pace clock to reach their target zone. Swimmers improve their efficiency and endurance in the water, as well as their overall physical fitness with this full body workout. This program provides a foundation for youth interested in joining an age-group competitive swim club.
