AL: Bronze Cross (BC) / SFA

This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including the introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, teamwork and use of special equipment. Candidates must be able to swim 600 m in 18 minutes. Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR-C are pre-requisites for lifeguard training in the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) program and Lifesaving Society Instructors certifications. Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid (CPR-B). If you withdraw from a program 10 days or less from the course start date, a 50% refund is provided. AL: Bronze Medallion (BM) /Emergency First Aid (EFA)

Teaches lifesavers of all ages how to respond in complex water rescue situations. Bronze Medallion develops physical fitness, decision-making and judgement skills in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers demonstrate stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for all advanced lifesaving awards. Candidates must be able to complete a 500m swim in 15 minutes or less. The Emergency First Aid component teaches general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, CPR, choking, respiratory and circulatory emergencies such as heart attack and stroke, and how to deal with external bleeding. The CPR-B component teaches the appropriate CPR and choking procedures for children and infants. Successful candidates receive both Emergency First Aid with CPR-B certifications. Emergency First Aid is recognized by the WSIB. Prerequisites: Bronze Star or minimum age 13 years. If you withdraw from a program 10 days or less from the course start date, a 50% refund is provided. Candidates that have Bronze Star and are under 13 years of age can register for this course by calling 416-338-4386 or attend an in-person registration site on priority registration days. AL: Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor

Through classroom learning and in-water practice, this course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principals of learning and teaching, and they master basic progressions of teaching. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross or NLS. AL: National Lifeguard: Pool

This course is designed to develop sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement and a mature, responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard in a pool setting. The program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, communications and the prevention of accidents and the treatment of medical emergencies. Participants are taught advanced lifeguarding skills. This award remains current for two years from the date of certification. Candidates must bring proof of pre-requiste awards. Prerequisites: Minimum age of 16 years and proof of Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid with CPR-C. SFA/CPR-C MUST be from one of the following recognized agencies: Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance and Canadian Ski Patrol. If you withdraw or transfer from a program 10 days or less from the course start date, a 50% refund is provided. This program is designed to test the candidate's lifeguarding skills in order to maintain current certification at the National Lifeguard level in a pool setting. Candidates are required to bring their own whistle and proof of original certification. Prerequisites: National Lifeguard Pool certification. AL: Standard First Aid (SFA)

The 16-hour Standard First Aid course provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course is for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid such as: medical/legal aspects, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid is recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and the Ontario Health Regulation and is one of the prerequisites to NLS. Prerequisites: None. If you withdraw from a program 10 days or less from the course start date, a 50% refund is provided. No refunds are given for classes or programs that you miss. 100% attendance and active participation are mandatory!

Upon successful completion of this program, candidates will be able to instruct the Toronto Learn to Swim program including Guardian, Preschool, Super, Ultra Swim and the lifesaving awards of the Lifesaving Society. Time is devoted in both classroom and water sessions to developing skills in the areas of class management, teaching, evaluation, leadership, communication and administration. This award remains current for two years from the date of certification. Candidates must bring proof of prerequisite awards to the first class. Prerequisites: Minimum age 16 years (by the last day of the course) and Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard. Recommended: Standard First Aid with CPR-C and Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Course. Registration Methods

  • Online Registration
  • Touch Tone (TTR): Call 416-338-0000 between 7:00am and midnight beginning on the session registration start date until the first day of the program; Call 416-3 38-4386 once a program starts.
  • Operator Assisted: Call 416-338-4FUN (4386) to register with a Customer Service Representative
  • In-Person & Drop-Off: Register in person at a designated civic or community centre on registration day or between 8:30am and 4:30pm from the day after registration day until the third class of the program
