Water Polo Instructor

This clinic is for anyone interested in becoming a water polo instructor. Coaches will learn basic water polo skills, safety principles for participants with no water polo experience, as well as be able to teach basic skill sets in a fun and interactive way to their young athletes after taking this workshop. The combined Lifesaving Society Swim and Lifesaving Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate swim strokes and lifesaving skills. Through classroom learning and in-water practice, instructor candidates explore proven teaching methods; learning strategies and activities; a variety of stroke and skill drills; effective correction techniques; and evaluation criteria. Practice teaching is emphasized throughout. Prerequisites: 16 years of age, and Bronze Cross (or higher) certification. Lifesaving: Assistant Instructor

The Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor Course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching, and master basic progressions. The Assistant Instructor course emphasizes the roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants. The course incorporates the City of Markham Volunteer Orientation Workshop. This is an excellent stepping stone for candidates who hold a current Bronze Cross Award and who are working towards becoming a Swim Instructor. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross and 14 years of age.

AL: National Lifeguard Instructor and Advanced Instructor

This course is for experienced instructors. Designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach the National Lifeguard program. The classroom and pool sessions allow participants to demonstrate their knowledge, skills teaching, evaluation skills, etc. Candidates must bring proof of prerequisite awards to the first class. Pre-requisite: National Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor. Recommended: 2 years experience Instructing at Bronze level and Bronze Cross Examiner. If you withdraw or transfer from a program 10 days or less from the course start date, a 50% refund is provided. No refunds are given for classes or programs that you miss. 100% attendance and active participation are mandatory!

This course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate basic swim strokes, lifesaving skills, first aid skills, resuscitation techniques and related skills. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Swim Instructors teach candidates in all levels of the Swim for LifeĀ® program. Assistant Swim Instructor

Assistant Instructor Course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. 100 per cent participation encouraged. Prerequisites: a minimum of 14 years as of the last day of the course, and Bronze Cross (or higher) certification(need not be current). Course Length: 15 hrs. Please note: Due to a revised safety standard, the diving skills in Learn to Swim levels 5 and higher will not be taught at the Frank McKechnie, River Grove, and South Common pools beginning with the Fall 2017 session.
