Ontario Educational Leadership Centre (OELC)

OELC has been providing leadership development opportunities to students from across Ontario since 1948.  Each of our 14 unique leadership courses are developed and delivered by professionals, primarily teachers.  They focus on engaging and educating youth to maximize their potential as leaders, encouraging them to become responsible and participating citizens in their schools, communities and beyond.  Whether it is through the arts, athletics, school governance or global issues, our courses help Ontario youth get in touch with their leader within.

Leadership Courses

Whether it is through athletics, the arts, student governance or global issues, our courses concentrate on leadership skills and abilities that will support and assist students in their leadership endeavours in their home schools and communities. Each of our courses focus on individual leadership styles, team dynamics and collaboration, communication, creative problem-solving, and organizational skills. For this reason, responsibility, inclusivity, community and global awareness are components of every course.

You'll need your school and board information, a completed student nomination form (in PDF or JPG format) signed by a Teacher or Principal.

Grade-6 Courses

  • Grade 6 Foundations of Youth Leadership (Aug. 23 - Aug 27)

The Grade 6 Foundations of Youth Leadership at OELC is offered to Grade 6 students who are looking to learn more about the process of leading. They might already have a natural ability to influence others or show interest in leading others, but they are also keen to learn more about themselves as a leader through a variety of hands on and engaging activities.

This course enables the student to see themselves as a leader and learn more about the foundations of leadership. They will learn about the important relationship between leader and follower, as well as the life long process of being a leader. They will learn a variety of new skills that are the building blocks to effective leadership. They will be challenged to bring this new thinking back to their schools and attempt new challenges.

Leadership development will occur in group sessions, workshops and a variety of outdoor activities.

  • Grade 6 Leadership for the Intellectually Curious Learner (Jun. 7 - 11)

The Grade 6 Leadership Course at the OELC is offered to grade 6 students who have a keen and intellectual curiosity about themselves and the social world they live in. The course is designed to engage intellectually-curious students in a journey of self-discovery and acceptance as they develop the leadership skills necessary to effectively combine their ‘gift(s) with their passions’ to make positive contributions to the world. This course is also appropriate for those students who are identified as gifted. Students will be involved in leadership development sessions and social justice workshops as well as a range of optional outdoor recreational activities.

Intermediate Courses (Grade 7 and 8)

  • Intermediate Athletics Leadership (Jul. 12-18, Jul. 26-Aug. 1, Aug. 9-Aug. 15)

The Intermediate Athletics Leadership courses at OELC have a focus on developing students’ leadership skills through the medium of athletics. The ideal candidate is one who has demonstrated leadership potential or is eager to develop his or her emergent leadership skills. The course program is divided into three major areas: Leadership Development sessions; Focus Groups and Activity Sessions. Practical application of such a framework includes intramural programming; school-wide activity days, spirit day functions and programming; school and community student/athletic councils; and orientation days, to name but a few. Following successful course completion the student will have the skills to be successful in coordinating and facilitating any of the above leadership opportunities.

  • Intermediate Arts: Emerging Leadership (May 31-Jun. 6)

Our Intermediate Arts: Emerging Leadership course at OELC has a unique focus of developing students’ leadership skills through an exploration of the arts. The ideal candidate is not necessarily a student who is a ‘master musician, actor, artist, or dancer’ but one who has an interest in the arts and in particular, a student with leadership potential who is willing to learn about themselves, about others and how to apply their skills in their school and/or community. The emphasis of this program will be on the development of leadership skills through the following five disciplines: music, dance, drama, creative writing and visual arts. A series of challenging activities have been planned to help each student learn more about him/herself and the other students. It is expected that each student will identify ways in which the program teachings may be of particular use in their individual schools.
