York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) - Summer School Elementary Programs

International Languages

International Languages classes (other than English and French) are offered outside regular school hours to all York Region elementary school children, currently in grades JK-8 at catholic schools throughout York Region.  The program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education and will be of interest to students who wish to preserve their language, cultural heritage and traditions, and  to students who wish to study the language and heritage of another culture. We are unable to confirm individual registrations.  We will contact you ONLY if classes are cancelled or moved to another location, otherwise please bring your child to the first session at the location you have chosen.

A minimum of 23 students is required to start a class.

French Conversation

It’s never too early to expose your child to a new foreign language that will help them get a head start and encourage their intellectual and social development.  This program provides primary/junior students, early French language experiences in an interactive and artistic environment. Children will study the language through active participation and conversation. The sounds of grammar are introduced through dialogue that will help children develop basic French vocabulary and language skills.

This program features a mix of activities focusing on language, culture, art, and songs.  Interactive games, audio visual, music, and art also provide an environment where young children can be fully immersed in the new language and learn it naturally through play.

A minimum of 15 students is required to start a class.

French Immersion

This summer program is primarily designed for YCDSB students entering Grade 1 French Immersion in Sept. 2014.  While any exposure to a second language is beneficial, the French Immersion program will broaden and deepen that exposure as well as provide non-francophone children with a high degree of proficiency in the French language.

A minimum of 10 students is required.

Reading Readiness

Children entering Grade 1 or 2 will explore the world of reading readiness skills that will help them learn how to read successfully. Students will be given an opportunity to develop their reading readiness skills and become excited about learning how to read.  This summer program will help foster a greater sense of confidence as students experience the essential skills of reading readiness through various engaging activities.

A minimum of 10 students is required.

Skills Development

As well they will learn about the visual elements of line, shape and texture , colour names, colour mixing techniques and more .

Students will learn how media, technique and process are used to create works of art; how art has a variety of functions; how to identify, analyze and select subject matter, how historical and cultural contexts provide meaning for works of art, and how to assess the merits of their own artworks and the artworks of others.

As well, they will also  and improve their ability to interact with the computer and combine words, pictures, sounds, animation and video into much more persuasive, powerful empowering communication vehicles.

Multimedia presentations will provide children with an additional method of communication which can increase their self-confidence when expressing themselves.  These are tools which will serve them well in school and at home.

A minimum of 10 students is required.

TechnoFLASH

Adobe Flash (previously called Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform commonly used to create animation and dynamic web pages. Flash is not designed for the computer novice. This program is designed for individuals with basic computer skills and a desire to learn how to create animated movie sequences skills.

Students will use a variety of tools to create artwork, modify its settings, import and add graphics and create layers. They will add various kinds of animation effects to move objects across or around the screen, change the size, shape, transparency and colour of an object right on the screen. They will combine these concepts to form highly interesting movies.
