Assistant Swim Instructor

Assistant Instructor Course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. The course provides an introduction to swimming instruction and some of the key competencies required in successful teaching. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching, and they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. 100 per cent participation encouraged. Prerequisites: a minimum of 14 years as of the last day of the course, and Bronze Cross (or higher) certification(need not be current). Course Length: 15 hrs. Please note: Due to a revised safety standard, the diving skills in Learn to Swim levels 5 and higher will not be taught at the Frank McKechnie, River Grove, and South Common pools beginning with the Fall 2017 session.

CALA Instructor Group Aqua Fitness

This course is offered in partnership with CALA. Part Two: Group Aqua Fitness. This course will expand on the movement bank, fine tune your group teaching skills, and give you lots of practical experience to help prepare you for teaching group recreational aqua fitness classes. Course fee includes all course materials and certification opportunities. Membership with CALA must be current to take this course. Swim And Lifesaving / EFA Instructors With High Five PHCD

The combined Swim and Lifesaving Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate swim strokes and lifesaving skills. Through classroom learning and in water practice, instructor candidates explore proven teaching methods; learning strategies and activities; a variety of stroke and skill drills; effective correction techniques; and evaluation criteria. Practice teaching is emphasized throughout. The HIGH FIVE program is committed to assisting healthy development among children. This program teaches participants to integrate the 5 principles into program planning, conflict resolution and creating a safe environment. Mandatory manual is required. (Swimming & Lifesaving Instructor Pac). You must purchase the manual at the community centre when you register. 100 per cent participation required. Assistant Instructors is recommended. Prerequisite: 16 years of age by the end of the course, and Bronze Cross (or higher) certification. Course Length: 44 hrs.

CALA Instructor Healing Waters Program

This course is offered in partnership with CALA. Aquatic Post Rehabilitation Instructor: CALA Healing Waters Program. This course will include the CALA Aquatic Post-Rehabilitation Prep Course and CALA Aquatic Arthritis and Joint Disorders Course. The program provides 23 hours of applied leadership training including theory and practical components. The two courses provide the necessary skills to enable you to instruct a safe and effective class for participants who have arthritis or are completing a rehabilitation program. Course fee includes all course materials and certification opportunities. Membership with CALA must be current to take this course. If your membership requires renewal this will be included in the non member course fee. CALA membership will be verified with the CALA office prior to the workshop. Confirmation receipts will be mailed within 2 weeks or e-mailed immediately

Online registration for Fall and Winter programs begin August 15. In person registration available at recreation facilities and the Customer Service Centre beginning August 22.

Programs with low enrollment may be cancelled. Remember to register early.
